In the forty-sixth World of Warcraft podcast episode, the Vale goes away in patch 5.4 and it makes us feel; we proclaim the Death Knight as the new main and tank all the LFRs; we study greatness as Sláinte explains all the things Holy Paladin, macros, and the Nostromo; we reveal our least favorite profession for our thirty weeks of WoW; Molsan finally gets his blue dragon; and we want you to smile when you attend Blizzcon 2013.

Holy Pally Macros and More

Email from Abbish

I’ll elaborate on my question after giving a little background.

I played WoW from mid Wrath to mid Cata and then took a break and just came back to MoP. I’ve always played a paladin as my main but have always tanked. My raid group of friends recently convinced me to come back, but they needed me in a healer role. I leveled and geared up as quickly as I could much as I’ve done in the past (more on that later). Since healing is quite different from dps and tanking I’m feeling a bit lost on how to setup my keys.

After looking around and talking with our other healers I realized people either click to select raid members and then hit keys or bind mouse over macros and use some sort of key combination while hovering over the raid frame. I believe most healers prefer and recommend the mouse over method so that’s what I went with.

I have a Naga with 7 of 12 usable buttons on the side (I have big hands and can’t contort to hit the others) and a Nostromo (which I’m still getting used to) on which I can use almost every button comfortably. I then went through the spells I’ve been using and those I think might come in handy and grouped them up.

Mouse Over Targeted – Main Usage: Holy Shock, Holy Light, Divine Light, Flash of Light, Holy Radiance, Eternal Flame, Cleanse

Mouse Over Targeted – Support Type: Hand of Purity, Hand of Freedom, Hand of Salvation, Hand of Sacrifice, Hand of Protection, Lay on Hands

Non-Targeted – Main Usage: Light’s Hammer, Light of Dawn, Divine Plea, Divine Protection, Divine Shield, Crusader Strike

Non-Targeted – Support Type: Devotion Aura, Avenging Wrath, Holy Avenger, Divine Favor, Guardian of the Ancient King

So my thought was to bind each group separately to the Naga buttons using the Nostromo button as a modifier. So the way this works is I can cast group 1 with the Naga and no modifier, group 2 with Naga + Nostormo 06 bound to control, etc.

I end up with all 4 groups bound to key combinations of the Nostromo and Naga and I just have to learn which is which. In game I’ve tried just about every raid frame addon and I kind of like Grid + Clique the best so far with Vuhdo a close second. I think I ended up where you were going in your Tweets to me.

Now to my questions.

Does this sound like a good setup? I hear people talk about their favorite raid frames all the time, but no one explains how they use it, what’s connected to it, what keys they are hitting and why, etc.

How do you move? I’ve bound the Nostromo thumb pad to wasd (with strafe not turn) but it feels very slow and clunky. I primarily used the mouse + both mouse buttons to move before with wasd used just a bit in combat for minor adjustments. But if I use my mouse to move I have to take the pointer off the raid frames which means I can’t cast anymore. When I need to cast again I have to find the cursor on the screen, which isn’t easy in some fights, and get it back to the raid frame meaning I’ve stopped moving again. So I tend to stand in a single spot, cast cast cast, move with the mouse – no casting – to find a new spot, then find my cursor and start casting again. In high movement fights I tend to have low hps. Is that just the way paladins are? Is there a good binding setup for Holy Shock/Light of Dawn so I can at least cast something on the move?

I was so excited about the TSM info that I forgot about the 30 weeks!

First Aid.

At least you can collect usless stuff with archaeology.

Third time’s a charm, right?

After thinking about this for a bit, I’d like to change my answer to Archaeology.  The question is “least favorite” not “least useful”.  At least I can ignore First Aid.

I’m not sure what I was thinking to say that a basically useless profession, First Aid, is worse than the grind to get a Crawling Claw.  I think, possibly, that I have a memory blockage caused by the trauma from digging for it.

I enjoyed what you guys had to say last week regarding player housing. I think it would be really cool to decorate your “home” with in-game trophies, e.g., old gear sets and legendary weapons. I have a similar idea: give players the opportunity to obtain mounts, titles, and gear that is specific to each xpac, e.g., Atiesh, the Amani War Bear, and <Hand of A’dal>. These things don’t give you an advantage in future game play, but from a nostalgic sense they are invaluable. As someone who started playing in 3.1, every time I see a player with the Corrupted Ashbringer I can tell immediately that said player was around during the old days of WoW, saw things that I never will, and probably has a wealth of stories to share. As more “old timers” leave the game, there are fewer examples of xpac-specific gear/mounts/titles. Sadly, that means that new players may never have their curiosity piqued by creative designs of yesteryear.

My favourite Cataclysm dungeon was Well of Eternity. It had fun mechanics and great lore! “Illidan!!! What are you DOING?!!?!”

Mildrid (Earthen Ring) / Svander (Dark Iron)

Favorite Cataclysm Dungeon:

Tomb of the Cybermen in Uldum Highlands.  Love the mechanics on the fight where you have to keep replacing the well fed buff, and the other fight where you have to trigger 5 cut scenes in the correct order.  Also great that they got unmistakable voice acting by Shia LaBeouf for the final boss Twain Mark IV.

Hey BS crew!

First off, let me state that it will be an absolute crime if you don’t name your Singing Sunflower “MolSUN”.  Not only is it a fitting tribute to an awesome co-host and BFF, but also the irony of juxtaposing the sunflower, which is all about renewal and positivity, with Molsan’s generally sardonic outlook on things is pure pet-naming gold.

Also, if you have a disgusting oozeling and fail to name it “Dan Gooey”  I will uninstall WoW, move to Canada, buy a horse and stop bothering people.

On a similar note:  I am somewhat of a pet naming enthusiast, and though I’m humble about it, I can’t deny that I’m kind of a “big deal” on my server.  I tend to give my pets names that reflect either their physical appearance or general abilities.  For example, my Emperor Crab is named “Crabface McPinch” and my Anubisath Idol proudly wears the moniker “Dogface Manbody”  I was recently attempting to name my Kun Lai Runt “Mr Smashy” and I was denied.  Apparently the prefix “Mr.” is used in several popular euphemisms referring to several popular body parts that Blizzard deems sexual in nature.  It didn’t bother me until I remembered that “Mr Wiggles” was one of my Blizzard-named pets.  I submit to you that “Mr. Wiggles” is far more provocative than “Mr. Smashy”.  As a little experiment, I attempted to name my pet biscuit-enhanced chicken “Enourmous Cöck” and was successful.  I swear I don’t know what Blizz is thinking sometimes

Cheers,

Questions about mouse over macros and Naga and Nostormo

I really love listening to the show because it has changed the way I play and the way I feel about the game. Up until a few weeks ago (when I found your show) I tended to race to max level and race to grind gear. I thought that’s what I needed to do and I needed to stay caught up with my raid team even though we are just a casual group of friends who raid twice a week. Once there, as I am now, I tend to just work the AH to make gold. I never experienced the game content outside the raids and heroics. I never cared about lore, secondary professions, achievements, pets, mounts, etc.

Listening to you two discuss the game and how you play has made me interested in those other parts. I thank you for that.

Thanks

wk 23: The longest I have gone without playing is a year. I initially started playing on my husband’s account, and he chose to stop his subscription to focus on studying for an exam. (this was all before we were married) Eventually I just couldn’t take it anymore, and so I started my own account. 7 months and 1 marriage later, I was able to use the Scroll of Resurrection to coerce him back into the game.

That being said, I do take a Wowcation  every year when I go into Crafting SweatShop Mode for the holidays. Also whenever anything breaks, I am very quick to boycott until it’s fixed. Maybe that makes me flighty or maybe I’m just a brat, but if the game doesn’t feel right, I just can’t play.

wk 22: First I need to say that I name ALL of my pets. I tend to favor names of past family pets, punny names like Kaity, my Little K.T., and old man names like George, my Blossoming Ancient.

My favorite pet to run with is my Dark Phoenix Hatchling. She’s not my highest level or my best battler or most rare… but she’s the one I Most enjoy hanging out with and seeing. She’s named Cramoisi, which is literally “Crimson” or a Purple hued red.

wk 20: Most sought after loot is the Ashes of Al’ar. I only have it on a Tournament Realm and the pink and orange streamers are my favorite part.

wk 19: Resto Druid, with Misty Monk as a close second. I do NOT Ever play in those weird animal stances with the exception of my purple birdie, Orca for swimming, and Emergency Monster Tree. Even when I have to DPS I am a Sparkly Elf and not a Boomkin. ew. But I am a healer to the core and enjoy all healing classes.

wk 17: Fav Profession is Herbalism on my Druid, and Fishing on everyone else. Herbing is so relaxing, just flying around gathering, never messing with mounts… I love it.

wk 18: yes, everyone is right, it’s the people. But for me in particular, it’s getting to play with my husband. The game is the most fun for me when we are playing together (He Tanks, I heal). And this impact extends into our lives from listening to podcasts together to buying one another things for gaming to just spending time together… Instead of the Spouse Aggro that so many talk about, Warcraft enriches our relationship and provides us with something very special.

Molsan & Slainte,

Bitter & Salty is, hands down, the most enjoyable WoW podcast out there, especially for those who play it “our way.”

I’ve been playing since launch, most of the time in a friends & family guild, which has now dwindled to just two of us.  I miss the social aspect of a friendly, casual guild and your show has made me feel like I’m in <Bitter and Salty> even though I’m far away on Kirin Tor.  So like a few recent audience members, I’ve decided to start a character on Earthen Ring.  Looks like you need a pandaren warrior for the Stay Classy achievement, and that is a class I need to learn.  So I’ll leave my druids at home and Weian (Way-anne) would be thrilled for the opportunity.

Also, I hate it when Mom & Dad fight about levelling challenges, so please hug a little bit in your next pre-show.

Hello gentleman,

I’m writing in to report an achievement, my tauren hunter earned this weekend. He got the “Represent!” achievement for acquiring a tabard. Why is this a big deal? Because the tabard in question is the official Bitter & Salty guild tabard! Not only did I get my level 1 toon in the guild, my fiancé also joined as well. (She has a non-official achievement of her own to report as she, as a level 1 BLOOD ELF died to fire damage in Thunder Bluff, wrap your head around that one)

Thanks to Strumpet for the invites!

Have a great show guys!

Guignol – B&S guild Earthen Ring US

Here’s an explanation for Blood Tap and why its so useful for a blood DK.

Almost all of your moves are dependent on one of three types of resource runes which gradually refresh over time.  There exists a fourth type of wildcard called a “death rune”.

Blood Tap is used to game the resource system and give you instant death runes so you can cast the abilities you want to be casting like death strike, blood boil, or death siphon without waiting.

Charge up the Blood Tap by casting  filler spells dependent on runic power like rune strike and death coil.  As soon as you have over 5 charges on your blood tap, smack that button and then presto you can then hit one of your nukes without waiting.

By maximizing the amount  of times you can cast the spells which heal you, your DK can be well nigh invincible.  My lvl 80 DK has solo’d heroic 5 mans like Pit of Saron and a heavy use of blood tap to ready death strike and death siphon is my main survival tool.

PS. also reforge everything you can to mastery once you start getting gear that can be reforged to really pimp your death strike’s absorption shield
